Summary

This project presents the process of creating Backstage, a platform for managing online music distribution.

The goal was to create a system where independent artists could share their musical works in a simplified way, maintaining their rights to the creations.

This project was carried out for a job application at a company according to the requested context and has no connection to real companies or products.

design process

After the initial interview with the company and access to the content about what was expected for the test, I started a research to understand the challenges faced by artists when sharing a song online.

The most relevant topics were the manual process and the time spent sharing content on each of the music platforms, as well as:

  • Uncertainty about earnings.

  • Which platform to use (there are several with different price ranges and functionalities).

  • Mandatory rules and resources that need to be provided when registering a song (Metadata, ISRC, and other legal information).

Although existing music distribution platforms offer some level of automation, there is an opportunity to streamline the process even further and provide a more user-friendly experience for solo artists and small groups.

When analyzing the various existing platforms for comparison, I evaluated the following points:

  • Features

  • Interface

  • Pricing

  • Time to deploy across all platforms

These points helped me understand industry patterns and identify possible gaps in functionalities, as well as

  • What information is needed to share an album/song.

  • What are the benefits for a solo artist when using the available options.

  • What users are really saying about the platforms they use (public reviews, YouTube reviews, etc.)

This project was carried out for a job application at a company according to the requested context and has no connection to real companies or products.

KNOWLEDGE

ABOUT TECHNOLOGY

Good understanding of technology. Uses social networks, streaming platforms, and knows the basics of music production software.

CHALLENGES

& DIFFICULTIES

  • Confused by the complexity of the different music distribution platforms.

  • Overloaded by the various pricing models and distribution processes.

  • Lack of time to manage your music and releases on multiple platforms.

  • Limited budget for professional music distribution services.

GOALS

Release your debut album on all major streaming platforms.

Build a fan base and achieve exposure.

Make music your primary source of income.

WHY WOULD JONES CHOOSE THE BACKSTAGE

  • Easy to use and understand, even for those who do not have extensive technical knowledge.

  • Saves time and simplifies the music distribution process.

  • The free format allows Jones to experiment and build his audience before committing to paid resources.

  • Maintain control over your music and pricing strategy.

HOW CAN BACKSTAGE HELP

Simplify the music distribution process with a single platform for distribution and scheduling releases on multiple platforms.

Saves valuable time by eliminating the need to manage each platform individually.

The intuitive interface and clear instructions make it easier for Maya to understand the prices and upload requirements.

The free level allows him to distribute his music initially, with the option to upgrade to premium features, such as setting individual platform prices as his career grows.

ideation

User interface research

I analyzed the user interfaces of existing music distribution platforms to identify design patterns and best practices. This helped in making my own design decisions, ensuring a familiar and intuitive experience for users transitioning from other platforms.

Platforms consulted during the research:

  • recordunion.com

  • unchainedmusic.io

  • playtreks.com

Fluxos

User and system flows were created to assist in the project ideation, as well as all the resources and necessary steps so that no point left the user lost or without a solution.

PROTOTYPING

After defining the necessary items for each stage of the project, some wireframe screens were built so that the created pattern could be followed when prototyping the high-definition version.

The final prototype was created in desktop version (1440x900) to demonstrate the features and browsing experience through the Backstage.
